SNP MSP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Alasdair Allan has warmly warmly welcomed the announcement that Spanish shipbuilder Navantia have confirmed a deal to buy Harland and Wolff’s four sites including Arnish in the Isle of Lewis.
The announcement, expected to be confirmed in the House of Commons on 19th December 2024, means the 1,000 people employed across Harland and Wolff’s yards have their jobs secured along with pre-existing workers’ terms and conditions.
Navantia’s origins can be traced back to naval construction contracts in the 13th Century. Today, the company is owned by the Spanish state and receives substantial financing from the European Commission. It recently reported an annual turn over of £1 billion, indicating a strong future for the shipyards.
Following the announcement, Alasdair Allan commented:
“This is clearly great news for workers at Arnish, their families and the wider economy of the Western Isles. It’s certainly a welcome announcement as people prepares for the Christmas break.
“Navantia appear to have a strong record in the maritime industry with strong financial backing and a plan for the future.
“I would like to thank the hard work undertaken by all parties who helped bring this deal to fruition and those who have continued to support the workforce. This includes but is not limited to the Deputy First Minister and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
“As we begin to approach the new year, I am sure both myself and others look forward to seeing what this new chapter in Arnish’s history will bring.”
